Fish Pond Pumps and Filters

Submersible solar pond air pumps and filter equipment

Pond pumps are an important feature when putting up an artificial pond. Without pond pumps, water cannot move and may lead to a marsh. Pond pumps help circulate and filter water in the pond. Circulation is usually recommended at least once every two hours in order to prevent water from becoming stagnant and may attract mosquitoes from breeding into it. Pond pumps are also used for waterfalls, statues and pond spitters.

Pond pumps are classified according to the volume of water they pump. It is recommended that you determine the amount of water and get a pond pump that pumps about half the volume of water per hour. Simply put, the gallons per hour (GPH) should be about 50% of the total volume of the pond. Also, it must pump about one foot or more of the water at the same time. Most pump manufacturers provide user-friendly charts that show details of every pump and the quantity of water they move.

Pond pumps usually run on electricity and are set up under water. The pump rating or GPH should be increased if you want your pump to house fish and waterfalls. Pond pumps generally have two ratings namely GPH and the maximum waterfall height. The latter is measured from the top of both the pump and waterfall. This makes it difficult to determine the right pump for waterfall. Every inch of a channel's width normally requires an additional 100 GPH. To feed water into a fountain or statue, a smaller pump with a big head and with adjustable flow controls is needed.

It is important to choose the right type of pond pump. The wrong pump can lead to improper filtering of the water or insufficient flow of water to your features. Multi-purpose pond pumps are excellent for those who are uncertain which pump to choose. Multi-purpose pumps that are driven by magnets have mechanical pre-filters with a sponge mesh that trap bulky debris.

These pumps also come with adjustable flow controls, diverter valves for splitting the output stream into several devices and a built-in fountain that comes with several fountainheads. Moreover, multi-purpose pond pumps consume less electricity and no longer need a coolant. Water garden pond pumps are excellent for garden pond features like filters and running waterfalls as well.

When positioning pond pumps, it is recommended that you place them at the opposite end of a fountain or waterfall to allow maximum circulation.
